Making Pellets from Copra Cake

As part of our ongoing trails and research in to different raw material sources we have recently successfully made Pellets from Copra Cake.

First, let’s understand what Copra meal or Copra cake is. Copra Meal or Copra Cake is a byproduct of coconut oil production. It is obtained by drying and crushing the coconut meat, also known as copra, which is then used to extract coconut oil. The remaining material after oil extraction is known as Copra Meal or Copra Cake. Generally when the Copra is pressed in a special machine called and expeller, 2/3rds of it becomes Coconut Oil, and the remaining 1/3rd is Copra Cake.

Traditionally in the Philippines, Copra Cake has been processed with other ingredients to produce animal feed pellets for both the domestic and international markets. However, with the rapid expansion of plants converting Coconut Oil in to Bio-diesel or Bio-ethanol, the Coconut Oil production has rapidly increased in recent years, contributing now to a glut in Copra Cake with factories struggling to find an outlet. Combined with drives to become more sustainable, some factories are looking at using this surplus stocks of Copra Cake as a Biofuel for their own furnaces – to achieve the properties required by modern furnaces (especially those designed for coal) the Copra Cake needs to be pelletised first – step in Berde-Kaway.

What are the other uses of Copra Cake:
1. Animal Feed

One of the most common uses of copra meal or copra cake is as animal feed. It is a rich source of protein, fiber, and essential minerals and has been used as a feed ingredient for livestock, poultry, and fish for many years. Copra meal or copra cake is particularly beneficial for cattle as it helps in increasing milk production and improving the quality of meat. It is also an excellent source of energy for animals, especially during the winter season.

2. Fertilizer

Copra meal or copra cake is a natural and eco-friendly fertilizer that has been used in agriculture for decades. It contains essential nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus that are beneficial for plant growth. When used as a fertilizer, copra meal or copra cake helps in improving soil health, promoting root growth, and increasing crop yield. It also helps in retaining moisture in the soil and reducing erosion, making it an ideal choice for sustainable farming practices.

3. Cosmetics and Skincare

Copra meal or copra cake is a common ingredient in many cosmetic and skincare products. The oil extracted from copra meal or copra cake is rich in vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for the skin and hair. It is often used in hair care products to promote healthy hair growth and add shine to dull hair. In skincare products, it helps in moisturizing and nourishing the skin, making it an ideal ingredient for creams, lotions, and soaps.

4. Animal Shelter Bedding

Copra meal or copra cake can be turned into an absorbent material that is suitable for animal shelter bedding. It is an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional bedding materials like straw or wood shavings. It is highly absorbent, easy to clean, and helps in reducing odors, making it a popular choice for animal shelters and farms.

In conclusion

Copra meal or Copra cake is a versatile ingredient with various uses in different industries. From animal feed to biofuel to skincare, it has proven its worth as a valuable byproduct of the coconut industry. With its high nutritional value and eco-friendly nature, copra meal or copra cake is an essential ingredient that will continue to benefit various industries for years to come and pay an important role in the drive for a cleaner and brighter future for all.
